  1. Mine was a flannel shaggy. We sewed a line of sewing about 2 cm. in from the edge and then clipped "fringes" just like the blocks were clipped. Worked out well.

  3. I've never made one but have read about them -- and believe after binding the quilts, people throw them in teh washer and dryer and let that help to make the shaggy top really shaggy.

Yours is gorgeous -- love the fabrics you used!

  4. Looking good Peg! YOu need some good spring loaded scissors to make all the clipping easier.

  6. Hey Peg
I love your shaggy quilt...I have made 2 - both for children and have run a line of stitching about 1/2 an inch from the edge all the way around and 'clipped' it just like all the other seams. I found this worked well and as the kids quilts get a fair bit of wear and tear.it washes well also. Both of mine have been flannels.
    take care & talk soon

  7. Hi Peg,
I did my edge on my mums shaggy like Vanessa's. just clipped the edge. I also didn't use batting, just the flannel fabric for the front and back. clipped the lot. Since doing this one I have seen many variations of shaggys. Must take a picture of mums quilt to put on my blog....
Your quilt is going to look fantastic! I have the same fabric here (barefoot roses FQ bundle) and am sorting out what I am doing with it - a reversible quilt with some stitchery.

  8. Very pretty Peg, I've only done the one for Hollie, and like a couple of the other ladies I stitched around the outside edge, about an inch in and clipped as you would on the blocks. I did buy a specail pair of scissors that are designed for rag quilts. Fiskars, spring loaded, makes the job so much easier on the hands.

  9. Hi Pat, love your work in progress. Much like the others I did a flannel raggy, however I did a double row of stitching around the outside to make it more secure. I found that when the clips were closer together(no more than a quarter inch)it frayed nicer in the wash. I also found that using to the fiscars spring loaded snips saved a lot of effort.

  15. I've made a shaggy quilt and put a binding on before clipping. I've also made several shaggy shoulder bags and just clipped the edges. I'm happy with both methods. Love the colours in your quilt.

  16. Love your shaggy. I've made a few of these and I agree with several of the others...spring loaded scissors are the way to go. Also, I found that if you clip row by row (instead of skipping around) you have less of a chance of missing any seams.

  17. Goodluck with the clipping Peg!! It makes alot of mess!! I have made one before and got covered!! Around the edge, I just sewed around the edge about 1/2" around then clipped like all the other seams.

  18. A shaggy quilt has been on my wish to do someday -list a long time. I would clip the edges too. And as the happy owner of Fiskars spring loaded scissors I can only say they really make a difference!

  19. Lovely, lovely, lovely...I've made six so far and two more to go...I clipped the edges as well using a half inch seam all the way around - only difference being I cut the wadding the same size as the fabric....now I think I need to start collecting together some bits to make one just for me....inspiring!

  20. I have made 6 of these, thought I would never make one as I did't think I liked them. but I love them, I use cheap flannel for the batting and but it 1/2 inch smaller then layer and stitch each square in and X. This makes for esier joining. I did bind mine as I liked the finish it gave.
Yours looks super, must go and make myself one. lol.

  21. I've made over 25 of these shaggy quilts and I'm not fond of the ragged edges-kind of fuzzy on the nose! :) I like to make a final border that finishes at 2 1/2"--so I cut a 7" wide strip and piece as many as I need to go the length of the quilt and fold in half, making it now 3 1/2". Insert a 2 1/2" strip of batting against the 'fold' line. Stitch a lazy, curvy line down the batting to hold in place. Then place the border piece on the 'smooth' side of the quilt and stitch with a 1" seam allowance (that what all my seams are in these type quilts) and then you have a finished edge and NO binding to do! I JUST finished another one and I'll show it on my blog this week if this isn't clear. :)
